Whether it's hiking outdoors or cycling at night, lighting equipment is an essential piece of gear. While most people likely own a regular torch, which is useful, it does require the use of one hand during operation, making it inconvenient in many outdoor scenarios. Is there a compact and elegant lighting product that can free up both hands and solve the challenges of outdoor illumination? The Oclip Pro might just be the perfect solution.
Unboxing and Design
The compactness of the Oclip Pro is evident right from its packaging. It continues the packaging design tradition of Olight products, with a white exterior that showcases the product's appearance. This light comes in four colour options: apart from the orange version, there are also black, OD Green, and Fortune Snake special editions.
The overall dimensions of the Oclip Pro are remarkably compact, with a total length of just 57mm, and both width and thickness close to 28mm. It's almost like a tiny toy, fitting perfectly in a pants pocket or backpack. It's even smaller than lipstick, making it perfectly suitable for women to carry in their purses.
Don't let the small size of the Oclip Pro fool you; its materials and craftsmanship are top-notch. It features an all-metal body design, with a total weight of 53 grams, giving it a substantial feel in the hand. Moreover, it is crafted using CNC machining processes, so there's no need to worry about the build quality of the Xiao Fang Xia. It can thoroughly withstand close inspection in your hands.
The Newly Upgraded Triple-Light Source Design
The most significant upgrade in this generation of the Oclip Pro is the addition of a triple-light source illumination system. Typically, small-volume EDC or clip lights we commonly see are equipped with only one LED for lighting, which struggles to meet diverse illumination needs. However, Olight has equipped the Oclip Pro with three independent LEDs, each responsible for the white spotlight, white flood light, and red light, respectively. This enhancement significantly broadens the range of environments in which the Oclip Pro can effectively utilise.
The two LEDs at the top are equipped with relatively small reflectors, both featuring orange peel textured surfaces and are responsible for providing flood lighting. The left LED is a white light LED with a maximum brightness of 500 lumens, an effective range of 44 meters, and a runtime of 144 hours at the 1-lumen moonlight mode. Paired with this compact reflector, it delivers a soft, smoothly transitioning, and evenly spread light beam, making it ideal for various close-range practical lighting needs. Despite its small size, achieving a brightness of 500 lumens far exceeds the threshold of mere adequacy. Since higher brightness levels lead to increased power consumption, it is recommended to use the medium brightness setting of 100 lumens for everyday use. This setting strikes an excellent balance between brightness and battery life, offering approximately 3.5 hours of runtime.
Adjacent to the white flood light is a red LED, which boasts a maximum brightness of 40 lumens, an effective range of 12 meters, and a runtime of 29 hours at a low brightness output of 4 lumens. In previous models of this type of torch, the red LED was primarily used as an indicator light. However, Olight has enhanced its maximum brightness to 40 lumens, making it fully capable of serving as a functional light source. Red light is less stimulating to the human eye compared to white light and is also less attractive to insects. Therefore, it is suitable for use in scenarios where eye protection is necessary or in outdoor environments.
The third LED in the Oclip Pro is also a white light LED, but with a smaller luminous core. It is paired with a larger reflector than the other two LEDs, enabling it to produce a more focused beam. Despite its maximum brightness of 380 lumens, which is less than that of the flood light LED, its effective range extends to 120 meters.
Convenient Mode Dial Design
It's important to note that the more functions an LED has, the more complex its operation becomes, requiring consideration for both different brightness levels and various mode selections... Olight has ingeniously equipped the Oclip Pro with a mode selection dial to simplify these intricate operations. This dial is conveniently located on the side of the torch, surrounding the metal switch.
There are three modes in total, corresponding from left to right to white flood light, white spotlight, and red light, each marked with a laser-etched mode indicator. Simply aligning the dial's protrusion to the desired position allows for quick switching between modes.
Additionally, paired with Olight's classic metal button operation mode, within each mode, you can long-press the switch to enter the moonlight mode, double-click to access the turbo mode, and after powering on, you can also long-press the button to cycle through the desired brightness levels. This design ensures that the operation is not cumbersome at all, and after a brief period of acclimatization, users can swiftly find their preferred settings.
Moreover, concealed within the button switch of the Oclip Pro is a battery indicator light. This light activates each time the flashlight is turned on (excluding when entering moonlight mode) and when the mode dial is adjusted while the device is powered off. It uses green and red colours to indicate the remaining battery level, providing a clear and intuitive way to monitor the internal power status.
Multi-functional Clip, Versatile Uses at Your Fingertips
On the back of the Oclip Pro is its disproportionately large clip, which boasts a maximum opening width of 14mm. Coupled with its strong clamping force, this allows the Oclip Pro to be easily secured to virtually any place it can grip. The inner side of the clip features a silicone texture, further enhancing its anti-slip capability. You can attach it to a cap brim, clothing, or a backpack for illumination.
Conclusion
Whether it's nighttime car trouble or just rooting in a dim attic for holiday lights, there are times when you need a small, simple, hands-free light, and the Oclip Pro Rechargeable Clip-On Light from Olight fits the bill.
